Vista Cracked What a Suprise

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Before the latest Microsoft Operating system has even arrived in most stores the software has already been successfully cracked.  The hack does not actually crack Vista but falsely activates the copy.

Is this even really news, I don’t really know but since eWeek has reported it I thought that I might as well have my say so.

Antivirus for Free

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Although it is common knowledge to most people (well actually not most as it turns out) antivirus solutions on home users windows installations should be provided by free software.

The most obvious solution is to install firefox instead of the old dog internet explorer 6 which will stop a lot of the attacks from actually happening in the first place.

Then I would personally recommend that you take a look at Avast home user for your virus protection as it has the facility to do a complete boot time scan which seems to find virus that others (AVG!!) do not.

But softpedia has comiled a list of all of some of the free anti virus software around today and unsurprising they come to no real solutions or preference.  Is this because all three players reviewed also put some money into softpedias advertising fund or am I just being a bitch?

Paint dot Nat Alpha 3

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

This is a hidden gem of an application for Windows. Paint dot Net includes some real heavy hitting features such as layers, special effects and plugins. The application works really well and is quick enough for a free Windows application!

Certainly a great alternative to the pay for Photoshop Elements and almost any of the other budget photo editors available on Windows or OsX. (I am still waiting for a quality Mac Intel paint application of at least this standard to arrive, GimpShop is about the closest but its Linux heritage shines through way too much for me.

why linux doesn’t need defragging (and osx) and another reason to dump Windows

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

I hate windows even more each day and this is just another reason why I dumped it after having to use it for 10 years of my life. Not that OSx or Linus are brilliant, it is just that I don’t want to spend three hours of my life every week cleaning spam, virii and defragging my computer just to get it back to a normal working situation.

Windows

ultimate list of Free Windows software from Microsoft

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

It has been known for a long time that Microsoft has given away powertoys but here is a more comprehensive list.

Agent seem more than useless though, actually really annoying in fact, but the alt tab replacement is nice, as is myfonttool, tweakui is essential, the vurtual desktop tool came a long time  before the Apple annoucement this week, the cleartype tuner is useful (once or twice), and the ability to mount isos virtually is another boon.
