internet explorer 7 final is released

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

So now it is in the open, I will have to find a windows machine to install it on, test ALL of my websites, hack the fuck out of them (although most of them are standards based although not 100% perfect to W3C recommendations, but with a beast like IE that mean nothing) and then test them again in a couple of weeks when the first round of fixes are released.  So now not only do i have to spend hours testing a website in firefox, safari, opera, konqueror, internet explorer 6 (i dont do 5 it is a waste of time) and now ie 7.

This makes the break up of my time to create a website look like this:

Design website 30%
Develop website 30%
Create custom CMS 30%
Make it work in as many browsers as possible putting enthasis on IE (6 and 7) 30%

What a pain in the arse

Testing for IE7

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

The problem with the upcoming IE7 is that it will not work through Wine, so all Linux and MacOS web designers now have to run Windows either through Parrallels or Bootcamp, which is bad news really.

I personally am dreading the arrival of the next version of internet explorer, because although I try as hard as possible to write all of my code to the standards the news is that Microsoft have not made a standards based browser, but the usual *html css hacks used for IE5 and 6 will not work either.

So now I am anticipating some calls from my customers who will expect their websites to work in it, and I have a quandary on my hands: do i charge them for the upgrades or do it for free. After all the issue is not my websites but Microsofts browser?

The answer is of course to charge, I cannot anticipate Microsofts business decisions and also cannot force all the end viewers of web pages to use firefox.

Firefox 2.0 RC2

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

I have been using firefox 2 on my Macbook for a while now, simply because Firefox 1.5 runs like a dog on OsX due to the fact that Mozilla did not dedicate enough developers to the Mac port before this release.  And I have to say that is is a nice upgrade, everything seems to work as it should. Extensions and Thmes are now more logically in one menu item and the tabs dow work a lot better.

But the default new Toolbar graphics are really ugly.

Problems viewing sites in IE7?

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

So now that Internet Explorer 7 is just a few moments away, and since most web designers in the world already have migraines.  Someone has come out with an app that downgrades IE7 to IE6 behaviours.

Oh dear, why oh why oh why……

Internet Explorer on OsX without virtualisation

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

I have finally managed to get Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 working on my MacBook Pro without Parallels (which to honest is a bit of a pain, since it has to boot Windows, find the network and then load up IE in a window, whilst cutting my memory in half for all the other apps I need on at the same time for editing web sites).

But now with Crossover Office beta for my Mac, I can just run IE in a window, which means that it can access my local testing server and the internet without all the grief. As a sideline Crossover also runs WebCEO quite well even though it is not a supported application.

Thank Christ, I no longer even have to see that horrible Microsoft Colour Scheme again!
